TMD and Orofacial Pain

Temporomandibula Diseases (TMDs) are characterized primarily by pain and dysfunction (joint sounds, and limited, irregular, or deviating jaw function). Pain is usually aggravated by chewing or other jaw functions. In some cases, generally acute, bite changes can be also associated. The presence of other pain related problems (headaches, ear pain (otalgia), neck/cervical pain among others) are not uncommonly associated to TMD, therefore, a proper distinction of all of them (differential diagnosis) is extremely important to improve clinical success in this type of patients. TMD Pain and dysfunction can negatively affect the individual’s quality of life, especially in chronic TMD/OFP situations.
