Non-carious Lesion

Tooth surface loss’ or ‘tooth wear’ refers to the pathological loss of tooth tissue by a disease process other than dental caries (a bacterial infection). Those lesions have different etiologic factors and can be sometimes the result of local (teeth malposition, nonfunctional jaw movements) and/or systemic problems such as gastrointestinal disorders. The quality of life of an individual can be affect due to that a non-carious lesion can cause aesthetic (affecting the structural integrity of the tooth), functional (contribute to dental sensitivity), and/or predispose to other dental problems (facilitate bacterial plaque retention, influence pulp vitality).
